As Director of the Institute for White-tailed Deer Management and Research, Dr. James Kroll has made SFA a nationally known resource known for excellence in research in deer biology, management and economics.  His career has included membership in the Society of American Foresters (Texas Chapter), Wildlife Society (Texas Chapter), Texas Forestry Association (Past and Present Director), Texas Deer Association (Co-Founder), Southeast Deer Study Group, Southwestern Association of Naturalists, Sigma Xi, Beta Beta Beta, Phi Sigma Society, Texas Wildlife Association (Past Director), Texas System of Natural Laboratories (Director) and Xi Sigma Pi, Stephen F. Austin State University Research Committee, the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, Center for Applied Studies Council, Arthur Temple College of Forestry Faculty Alumni Committee.
Most recently, Dr. Kroll was appointed by Governor Scott Walker as the nation’s first Deer Trustee for Wisconsin, and given the authority to investigate and develop solutions to long-standing public issues related to the management of White-tailed Deer in the state. Kroll finished his work and delivered a comprehensive report and plan, hailed by diverse conservation groups as fundamentally sound, to Governor Walker and the Department of Natural Resources on 26 June, 2012. Public response to the plan has been extremely positive.

Although known around the world as the authority on White-tailed Deer, Kroll took time out from deer research to found and launch the nation’s first regional geospatial service center, The Columbia Regional Geospatial Service Center, which later figured significantly in the recovery of the Shuttle Columbia and its crew, following the terrible disaster on 1 February, 2003. The Center was cited by NASA and the federal and Texas agencies as being critical to these efforts. “It was the best and worst experience of my life, but a wonderful opportunity to show how geospatial technologies, developed for deer research, are important to emergency response,“ notes Dr. Kroll.

Since 2004, James Kroll has appeared in two leading national TV shows: North American Whitetail Television, Sportsman Channel, which received the Golden Moose Award. Kroll also starred in the hit television program, Dr. Deer, airing on the Sportsman Channel and Fox Sports. He manages a popular website -  Dr. Deer.com which serves as an on-line education and deer management assistance resource.  He has enjoyed tremendous exposure to the national wildlife group through publications and videos that feature his work and insight in white-tailed deer management.  He holds numerous offices in state, regional and national organizations.  Dr. Kroll is popular on the lecture circuit and blends technical and lay knowledge into presentations that educate, entertain and enlighten audiences enthusiastic about managing and sharing the joys of white-tailed deer management. He now is Emeritus Professor of Forest Wildlife at Stephen F. Austin State University, and is focusing his efforts in many areas, particularly on-line education for wildlife managers.
